Your Xbox gamertag is your identity across the entire Xbox network — Xbox consoles, PC via Xbox app, and any game that uses Microsoft's online services. Getting it right matters. This guide covers everything Microsoft allows (and doesn't allow) when it comes to gamertag names, including what happens when your chosen name is already taken.

Character limit: 1 to 12 characters

Xbox gamertags have a maximum length of 12 characters. There is no minimum enforced length per se, though very short names are almost universally taken. In practice, most available gamertags fall in the 6 to 12 character range.

This is notably shorter than most other platforms — PSN allows 16, YouTube handles allow 30. If you want a consistent name across multiple platforms, design your gamertag to fit within Xbox's 12-character limit first, then you know it'll work everywhere.

Allowed characters

Xbox gamertags support letters and numbers only. Specifically:

The following are not permitted in an Xbox gamertag:

Non-Latin scripts: Xbox supports gamertags in scripts other than Latin, including Cyrillic, Japanese (hiragana and katakana), Korean (Hangul), Arabic and others. However, numbers are only permitted alongside Latin-based characters — you cannot combine numbers with non-Latin scripts.

What happens when your gamertag is taken

If the gamertag you want is already in use, Xbox's system will suggest available alternatives. It may also automatically add a numeric suffix — for example, if "FrostBlade" is taken, Xbox might suggest "FrostBlade#1234" where the number after the hash is a unique discriminator.

This discriminator is invisible during normal gameplay — other players see just "FrostBlade" — but it means two people can technically share the same base name. The suffix only shows up in certain contexts, like friend lists and search results, where disambiguation is needed.

The best way to avoid this is to choose a name distinctive enough that it isn't already registered. Using a two-word combination, mixing in a number naturally (not as a suffix), or going for an unusual word are all effective strategies.

Checking if your gamertag is available

You can check availability directly when setting up your Xbox account or changing your gamertag in account settings. If you want to check without going through the change process, gamertag.net lets you search gamertag availability instantly without needing to sign in.

Changing your Xbox gamertag

Your first gamertag change is free. After that, Microsoft charges a fee to change it — currently around $9.99 USD, though this varies by region. Changes can be made through Xbox account settings on console, the Xbox app on PC, or at account.xbox.com.

This makes it worth getting the name right the first time. Generate a few options, check availability, sit on your shortlist for a day, and then commit.

Content policy

Microsoft's content policy prohibits gamertags that are offensive, discriminatory, or violate their community standards. Names that reference hate speech, graphic content, sexual material or illegal activities will be rejected or removed. Repeat violations can result in account action.
